I really hate most players on MVM.

Dude, I waited for all of ten minutes to start a match and people keep constantly shuffling in and out like the players aren’t good enough for them or they’re waiting to get in a match on the final wave. Its more annoying when the same people keep coming back several times.

I actually tend to have the opposite problem, myself. There’s a specific group of guys I usually play with (I don’t really server hop well), but there aren’t six of us, so we always end up booting out like a team’s worth of snipers and melee-demos before we get a pubbie worth playing with. The bright side is that the guys usually have a good sense of who’s going to actually contribute well, so generally when we finally accept someone, they’re in for the haul.

Those goddamn snipers. you want to deal big damage? Be a soldier.  You want to throw jars of slowing nonchalance?  Be a scout.  You want Crit times? Be a medic. Jesus christ dont get me started on melee demo

So people are getting rilled up because Penny Arcade is… asking donations via Kickstarter? And not actually forcing people to give them money? And that as far as I know the reason they’re doing this is to keep the site running without having to depend on Ads?!?!?! Which is what other webcomic…

Ooooh nooooo the most popular comic of the internet generation wants to go indie what’ll we dooooooo

Well look at it this way. Would you pay $300 for one of ‘em to follow you on twitter? And an extra $200 for them to retweet one of your posts?

I know independent funding is really goddamn expensive and all (heck, somewhere there’s a blog post by Amanda Palmer detailing exactly what the funds from her own kickstarter were going towards and explaining why she wasn’t just gonna swim around in dollar bills) but if I’m paying $9999 to have lunch with the two guys who made the “Dickwolves” joke I’d rather have them cover the travel expenses as well kthnx

I will admit that perhaps the incentives are perhaps not well-thought out but like the dickwolves joke itself, the whole shenanigan is something inherently benign or even positive that has rapidly careened in a terrible direction.

Ignoring the comment about the joke possibly being a positive thing… I’m still not sold on the project. They’re not even offering a product or service for your money until they reach over twice the desired funds - the actual target goal is to get rid of ads, which strikes me as something you don’t use kickstarter to do. MAYBE if it was something along the lines of “the target goal will be used to revive the DLC podcast (currently this is the achievement for $825 000) and extra funds will be used to reduce the presence of ads on the site” I’d be more forgiving towards it, But… come on.

Double Fine used Kickstarter to start work on a new adventure game. Amanda Palmer used it to fund her tour. Kory Bing used it to make and release a card game based on her webcomic. SMBC used it to help make a book. Penny Arcade is using this to… get rid of ads on their site. I’m not sold.

Penny Arcade actually was funded entirely by donations once upon a time. They’re trying to return to that, Kickstarter is just the means by which they’re accomplishing that goal. David Maguire made a post about this earlier: Kickstarter isn’t a charity. It is a platform by which people can say, “I want to do This Thing. I need This Much Money to do This Thing, but I don’t really have any way to get This Much Money unless people give it to me,” and then people who also want This Thing to happen can give money to the person who wants to do This Thing, so that This Thing can happen. Penny Arcade’s goal is to offer their comic ad-free; the only way to do away with ads is to find some other way to fund their comic. Ergo, Kickstarter. The main difference between now, and the old days of Penny Arcade, is that in the old days it was being done purely out of the goodness of the readers’ hearts and desire to see Penny Arcade keep happening; now, they’re being offered incentives which aren’t very much so if you’re not a complete slavering fanboy who thinks that being added to someone’s friend list actually makes them your friend. And like Night said: lots of comics are funded by reader donations. Penny Arcade is just big enough that they need to scale up their method of acquiring donations if they want to do so. Penny Arcade isn’t just the comic anymore, they have actual employees now.

It says right on the site that Kickstarter is “the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects.” Wanting to get rid of ads is not a creative project. And the only extra creative stuff the viewers will get out of it is only available if they give even MORE money than the intended goal. If it’s all about “give us money and we’ll give you incentives in return” there are plenty of places to do that, including their own store.

That’s true. Frankly, I never gave a damn one way or the other about the ads. I’m just watching it all unfold.

Olivia Penpraze.
19 years old.
Died from a Suicide attempt that left her brain dead. Her parents made the hardest decision of their lives by turning off her life support.
She had a Tumblr account with over 900 posts sharing her emotional turmoil, dealings with depression, loneliness & thoughts about her wanting to take her own life.
The only response she got, was insensitive assholes, like the majority of people on Tumblr, encouraging her to do it. She was bullied consistently.Olivia attempted to kill herself every year in May 1st since 2008.
In May 2012, her short life came to an end.
I know most people can’t tolerate posts like Olivia’s, whom find it attention seeking. My point to you people is…
EXACTLY!!
Of course it’s attention seeking what else it?! People share that part of themselves over the Internet because they obviously feel they can’t talk to anyone they know nor do they think anyone would care.
All I want is for people to cut out the bullying & talk to people like Olivia.A conversation to someone in desperation could save their life.
If people can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.
You never know…What you say could be used to decide whether they live or die.
Even if youre a b&w blog, reblog this.

Please, please be good to each other on Tumblr. And in life. How unbelievably heart-breaking that her life was cut short.

You just cant expect people you barely know to care.  You’ll never get it from them.  Anyone with serious emotional issues has to reach out for sure but it has to be in the right direction to have any effect.  To parents (though this may be the cause of the problem), Friends (Close ones.  Better off near the person in question to actually keep a eye on them.), and to the existing help of professionals.  Hotlines have been in place for some time now to help those having incredibly rough days and councilors at school and sometimes at certain jobs.
Word should be spread to the victims of depression, not the people online who couldn’t give two shits about other people.  Sufferers should be the ones being reached out to with information on how to fight depression and other mental illnesses. Any action to try and “soften the hearts” of misanthropes will just result in further mockery and spinning your wheels to no effect as other folks pay the price.
If you want to help you should be realistic. Everyday anger and sadness has dulled the emotions of most common people. Folks believe that since they work a shit job or are in a loveless relationship they can feel bad about themselves.  This turns into anger at the world for not caring about their problems and that in turn becomes a dispassion for their fellow man’s state in life.  “If I have to deal with bullshit then so can they” or “They need to toughen up” or “If they’d rather die, then they had better do it and decrease the surplus population.”
Wrapping this rant up kids: Help those who need help to find it and Dont worry about making help available everywhere. The internet is not a place to find pity and caring people.

I have to explain this every time Rick yells at the cat. He’s meowing because he knows he’ll eventually get a response. IGNOREEE HIMMMM. I don’t know, apparently that’s a really hard concept?

I think it’s more a case of impatience and frustration beating out logistics and consistent training, tbh.

Hasn’t experience established that Rick and your parents are kind of stupid?

There’s not a week that goes by where I dont hear about you calling me or becky a idiot.  One of these days I’m going to have a chat about your manners and who is the real idiot:  The woman who acts derpy for comedy sake or the jerkass in the front row who doesnt get it.  Go sit in the corner and think about being a adult for awhile.

PS: I’m way too handsome to be judged by you mortals
